HowTo: Power off in Gnome 3

Gnome 3 will detect if your PC supports suspend functionality.  If it does the 'Power Off' option in the system menu is replaced with 'Suspend'.  If you want to power off your computer yon need to hold down the alt key.  The text should then change to 'Power off'.  I searched around and could not find any articles explaining why they chose to do this.  I can not say I have ever used the suspend functionality before so I can not see any benefit in making it the default especially in this age on environmentalism and energy efficiency.
